The Bristol Watermen are an association of Sportspersons, Boatpersons and individuals drawn from around Bristol, who are responsible for organising the Head of the Avon Gorge Race.
![]() In recent years, before the Bristol Watermen went online, the City of Bristol Rowing Club very kindly managed our online entries for the Head of the Avon Gorge Race.
Now that the Bristol Watermen have gone online, we are able to manage our own affairs, but we remain extremely grateful to the City of Bristol Rowing Club for all their assistance.
The Bristol Watermen were founded in 1988, and since that time have organised the Head of the Avon Gorge Race, which was the very first Head Race of the Millenium. The name emulates the Bristol watermen of yore, who plied their trade in various types of rowing craft including the Wherry, ideally suited for the numerous ferry crossings of the River Avon.
The watermen pioneered the sport of Boat Racing in Bristol Harbour back in 1831, and continued to compete for some decades. At one period in the later 19th Century they formed the crew of an Eight in order to convey the Umpire following the Competitors in the Saltford Regatta.
